|Undergraduate Research Experiences for STEM Students: Successes, Challenges and Opportunities (February 2017)||
Undergraduate research has a rich history, and many practicing researchers point to undergraduate research experiences (UREs) as crucial to their own career success. There are many ongoing efforts to improve undergraduate science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education that focus on increasing the active engagement of students and decreasing traditional lecture-based teaching, and UREs have been proposed as a solution to these efforts and may be a key strategy for broadening participation in STEM.

The American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), with sponsorship from the National Science Foundation (NSF), will convene alumni of the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM) and alumni of the AAAS Lifetime Mentor Awards in a three-day event addressing “New Directions for Inclusive STEM Education and Career Mentoring.”

The 2015 Recognition Program, held in Washington DC, honors the 15 2012-2013 PAESMEM recipients. The 4-day gathering includes activities at the White House, at the Office of Science and Technology Poilicy (OSTP), and at NSF.

During National Mentoring Month, NSF sponsored a Google+ Hangout on STEM mentoring. Maria Zacharias interviewed several PAESMEM recipients, as well as Fae Jencks, White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and NSF Assistant Director Joan Ferrini-Mundy, who leads the Education and Human Resources directorate.

An "online source for sharing new findings and ideas about youth mentoring. The goal of the Chronicle is to encourage active dialogue around evidence-based practice in youth mentoring in ways that improve the practice of youth mentoring."
